APPLICATION & DEADLINES:

The application deadline for all of the competitions is February 1st, 2017

ELIGIBILITY:

The Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Competitions are open to contestants of every race, gender and nationality. Each contestant must be a member of ITEA. All applicants must be registered and present at the GPRTEC 2017 to be held March 2-4, 2017 in Ames. Iowa. The competitions will begin on Thursday, March 2nd at 1pm. Winners of each category will be announced at the evening concert on Friday.  Winners and finalists will be invited to perform on masterclasses during the day on Saturday.

 

JUDGES:

Judges for each competition category will feature prominent members in the applicable field.

 

PRIZES:

Gift Certificate Prizes from Just for Brass, Encore Music, Cimmarron Music, West Music and Scholarships from IET as well as a conference plaque.

 

COMPETITIONS: (all competitions will be LIVE.  Preliminary rounds will be unaccompanied, and GPRTEC will provide a pianist for final rounds when applicable)

Solo Artist Tuba

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation and winners will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Capriccio for Tuba and Piano – Rodney Newton (Winwood Music)

Final Round:  Sonata in F Major (complete work) – Telemann trans. by Ken Drobnak (Cimarron Music)

                         The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

Entry Fee:  $40

 

Solo Artist Euphonium

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation and winners will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Sonata for Euphonium and Piano – Eric Ewazen (Carl Fischer) - Movements 2 & 3

Final Round:  Concerto for Euphonium – Kenneth Downie (Winwood Music) - Movements 1 & 2.

                          The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

Entry Fee:  $40

 

Young Artist Euphonium

Eligibility: Participants must not be a full-time paid professional in either a performance position or university position.  Entrants must not have reached their 20th birthday as of December 1, 2017. Winners will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Adagio Cantabile (Lyrica No. 10) – Giuseppe Tartini trans. Leonard Falcone  (Cimarron Music)

Final Round:  A Caged Bird – Barbara York (Cimarron Music)

                         The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

Entry Fee:  $40

 

Young Artist Tuba

Eligibility: Participants must not be a full-time paid professional in either a performance position or university position.  Entrants must not have reached their 20th birthday as of December 1, 2017. Winners will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

 

Repertoire:

Preliminary Round:  Introduction and Dance – J. Ed. Barat/Smith (Southern Music)

Final Round:  Dans Profundo – Ray Strobel (Cimarron Music)

                         The conference will provide all finalists with a conference pianist.

Entry Fee:  $40

 

 

Mock Band Euphonium

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation and finalists will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

 

Repertoire:

Specific excerpts selected by the judges will be available on the stand or you can use your own parts.

Preliminary and Final round excerpts will be chosen from the following list:

Mock Orchestra Tuba

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation and finalists will perform live in a masterclass at GPRTEC.

Repertoire:

Specific excerpts selected by the judges will be available on the stand or you can use your own parts.

Preliminary and Final round excerpts will be chosen from the following list:

Chamber Music

Eligibility:  Participants must not be a full-time paid professional (euphonium, tuba, or trombone) in either a performance position or university teaching position.  There is no age limitation.  Each ensemble must consist of 4-6 members and any combination of tubas and/or euphoniums.  Each member of the ensemble must perform on all pieces during the competition.

 

Repertoire:

Repertoire is to be chosen by the competitors within the guidelines listed below. It is desirable to show contrasting styles and tempi during each round. Ensembles will be judged on the quality of ensemble performance; it is to the benefit of each group to choose repertoire that will best display group musicianship.

20 minutes of music maximum. Include the following:

Three contrasting works - complete or partial - one of which must be an original work composed for the instrumentation of the group.

Entry Fee: $100

 

                       

School Tuba Euphonium Ensemble Competition

           

Eligibility:  Any Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble that is affiliated with a University or High School.  All members of the ensemble must be members of ITEA.  Ensembles must be comprised of six or more performers and can include any mix of tubas or euphoniums.  

 

Prize:  A GPRTEC 2017 champion plaque.  Winner will have the option to perform on one of the final concerts during the conference. 

 

Format:  One live round, open to the public.   The final scores will be weighted as follows: 60% for the test piece, and 40% for the free choice item(s).

 

Repertoire:      Test Piece - Power by John Stevens  (roughly 2 minutes long)

 

Composition(s) of your choice not to exceed xx minutes. (subtract length of test piece from 20 minutes)

  

If an ensembles program does not fall within the required time, penalty points will be deducted from the adjudicators total at the rate of one point from each adjudicators score for each minute or fraction thereof by which the time is exceeded or lacking.

 

 

Entry Fee: $125

 

 

GPRTEC Alternative Competition

 

GPRTEC is looking for the next tuba-euphonium sensation! 

 

Eligibility: Any “act” that includes at least one tuba or euphonium performer on all music performed.  Group size is 1-12 people.  Instrumentation is flexible.  At least one member of the group must be a registered member of ITEA.   Ensemble must not contain professional musicians with full-time employment.

 

Prize: Cash Prize TBD pending registrations

 

Format:  This event will be held at a local bar/club in Ames, IA.  The event is open to the public (patrons at the establishment) to participate in the voting.  Winner is chosen by popular vote via online voting—American Idol style!  Innovation is encouraged!!  What do you think the average person wants to hear….not just the newest tuba-euphonium ensemble chart.  Perform cover band songs, original compositions, or musical theatre – whatever keeps your audience enthralled and loving what you’re doing--the most entertaining act will win!

 

Rules: Each set is 15 minutes long, plus 5 minutes of set up and tear down time (total).  A small drum set will be provided to minimize set-up logistics.
